The Big Blue

A creative cutting project drawing inspiration from Emanuele Crialese‘s ‘Respiro’ (2002) and Luc Besson’s ‘The Big Blue’ (1988). Both films have protagonists who become deeply affected by isolation or internalised trauma that sees them gradually unravel into despair. The ocean features as a backdrop in each and becomes emblematic of chaos, sanctuary and indifference. Whilst equally rich in the colour blue, the narrative of hysteria and destruction in the two films contrasts with colour and the surrounding mediterranean scenery which subsequently informed the clashing colour palette and disordered layers of the final garment.
